I make mistakes. I am very well aware of this. I am actually horrible at spelling. I may rely too much on "spell check." I hope my lackadaisical method of responding to making mistakes will rub off on some of my students.
The other day I was talking with a student about our shared inability to spell. I actually told him I shared with my mom that I might actually have a student who spells worse than I do. Her comment was "Wow, that's bad." (Not sure how he felt about that.)
His response was...I know why you teach Special Ed, so you can make mistakes and still feel smart.
I had to agree with that one.
As a student at the University of Idaho I was a member of The Student Alumni Relations Board (SArb). One of the things we did at most of our retreats was a "Quote Wall". On the wall (piece of paper) everyone was suppose to write a quote by someone during the retreat. We would finish by reviewing what the situation was and who said it. It was always a source of a good laugh and reflection.

Can I stay...
I hope everyone has moments to remind them why they do their job. The priceless moments where we a reminded we do have a positive impact on the world.
I had one such moment about a month ago. I was working with a student in an English class. With this particular student the academics of school isn't hard for him. It is the sitting still. He is being a teenage boy with lots of energy to begin with. Add to that ADHD. And to that over exaggerated nervous/anxious energy. These things are only increased if he feels at any level he may not be successful with the task at hand.
This day he was doing pretty well. He asked for help appropriately. He worked diligently. When it was time to go, he wanted to stay? Really. He was looking forward to P.E., which was his next class. However, he also wanted to complete his lesson so he asked; "Can I stay and finish my work?"

"I'll hold the door...'
*Warning*
There are those who take offence when offence is not intended. I don't take offence easily. I would not be posting this if I didn't think it was funny.
Someone was talking politics at work the other day, which is typically a bad idea. As innocent as I am just walked into the wrong place at the wrong moment. Being the curious sort and wanting to know what is going on, as much as possible, I asked what was going on. One of the therapist, the only one left in the room, commented that it was about politics and that it didn't matter because the whole world is going to hell in a hand basket anyway.
I let him know it was not my intention to go there...
"Oh, I've heard about you,...I'll hold the door open for you..."
he he he, how thoughtful he is, it really does make be giggle.

only language...
Although his last name is Spanish I currently work with a young man who does not look like someone whose first language is Spanish. I over heard someone ask him if he knew any Spanish. He calmly replied in the affirmative. When they looked surprised he added..."it's the only language I am yelled at in."

Idaho Woman
It was a busy day at work. I was walking across the court yard to get something off the printer. A group of boys was getting ready to go in the same door I was. One of the boys said they had found a snake. According to them it was in the Library. I didn't really think that much of it until I noticed their staff member holding a small green garden snake in his hand. I am not sure what the boys expected me to do. When I help out my hand to accept the snake from the staff member his comment was..."now that's an Idaho woman."
